Whenever you start a blog, first thing you need to make sure that people find your blog easily. The best way people can find your blog is through search engines. When it comes to search engines, we always think about Google. Yes, Google is still the most popular search engine in the world. But there are some others too.
Here at RoadToBlogging, we get most of the traffic from Google followed by Bing and other search engines. In recent times, I’ve noticed that traffic from Bing is increasing. So I wanted to track my Bing search traffic and started using Bing webmaster tools. In this post, I am going to share how to submit sitemap to Bing webmaster tools. Before moving to the tutorial, let’s get some idea about sitemap.
What is Sitemap?
A sitemap is a list of URLs of a website that helps search engines to crawl your site and index them. It’s an excellent way to tell search engines that you’ve updated your blog. It helps search engine bots to discover all pages of your site.
How to Submit Sitemap to Bing Webmaster Tools
If you are new Bing webmaster tools, here are some information for you. Bing webmaster tools is a free service by Microsoft that allows webmasters to add their site on Bing. It also offers sitemap creation, submission & ping tools, site statistics, keyword search tool etc.
Before submitting sitemap to Bing, you’ll have to create a sitemap for your blog. If you haven’t create your sitemap yet, create it now. It’s very easy. Read: How To Create XML Sitemap for WordPress Blog
Once you’ve created sitemap, go to Bing Webmaster tools. You can either use your existing MSN/Hotmail account or you can create a new one.
After logging to your account, enter your site URL and click on ‘ADD’.
On the next page, you need to enter your sitemap URL. Most of the cases your sitemap URL will be like http://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml
Then it will ask you to verify your site ownership. It offers 3 options to verify your ownership.
Option 1: Place an XML file on your web server
Option 2: Copy and paste a <meta> tag in your default webpage
Option 3: Add CNAME record to DNS
I found that adding meta tag is the easiest one. All you need to do is, copy the meta tag and paste it on the head section in theme editor. If you don’t know how to do it on your theme, use WordPress SEO by Yoast plugin, a must have WordPress plugin for SEO.
Once you’ve activated the plugin, go to WordPress Dashboard > SEO > Dashboard and enter your verification code in Bing Webmaster tools. [Not full meta tag, just the code]
Click on ‘Save Changes’ and go to Bing webmaster to verify your ownership.
That’s it. You are done. Your site will be indexed by Bing soon.
Hope it helps you to submit your sitemap to Bing. Do let us know if you face any difficulties. If you find this post useful, help me by sharing this post on Facebook, Twitter or Google+.
